What is an Aspect Ratio?
An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and its height. It's expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, like 16:9 or 4:3. It does not represent the actual size in pixels, just the shape.
Common Aspect Ratios
- 16:9 (Widescreen): The standard for YouTube, HD video, and most desktop monitors.
- 9:16 (Vertical): The standard for TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
- 1:1 (Square): Popularized by Instagram, great for grid layouts.
- 4:5 (Portrait): The optimal ratio for Instagram feed posts, taking up maximum screen real estate on mobile.
- 3:2: The standard ratio for 35mm film and most DSLR cameras.
Why It Matters
If you try to force a 16:9 video into a 9:16 space, you'll either get massive black bars (letterboxing) or you'll have to crop out the sides of the video. Using an Aspect Ratio Calculator helps you plan your crops and dimensions before you publish.
